IT security provider McAfee and Microsoft are combining to develop a new network access control programme.

The product is intended to protect private networks from unauthorized access and provide comprehensive endpoint health check tests.

Mike Carpenter, senior vice president of McAfee's Public Sector, said: "Our first priority is to secure government data, at all levels, on all operating systems."

Greg Bateman, manager of Microsoft's joint defence agencies team, added that taking necessary security measures is especially important in "an era of increasing threats and network attacks".

McAfee went on to say the venture is currently being piloted by several agencies within the US department of defence.

Last week, security adviser Experian commented that online consumers need to identify credit fraud swiftly to avoid thieves taking out loans and credit cards in their name.

Helen Lord, fraud and regulatory compliance director at the firm, said if a problem is dealt with at once, there should not be any lasting damage to credit reports.
