Information Security Lost data

For small businesses, losing computer data can damage a company's reputation as well as hurting financially, according to an industry expert.

A spokesperson for Small Business Computing has said that all businesses should have a good security policy in place and make sure that it is enforced.

She added that the ability to recover data is also important and organisations should have an off-site secondary backup system so that data can be restored.

"Financial losses are the main thing as data is valuable to the business as a whole," she said.

"[Data losses] will also impact on the integrity and the reputation of the business. Losing data that is important can breach confidentiality."

According to the Boston Computer Network, in any given year, six per cent of PCs will suffer an episode of data loss and 31 per cent of PC users have lost all their data at some stage.

The news follows reports by the BBC this week saying that many web designers are making simple mistakes and allowing hackers to target the information travelling between a web server and its browser program.
