The worldwide number of IT security professionals will almost double over the next four years due to new data regulations and a deeper understanding of risk, according to industry experts.
A Global Information Security Workforce study revealed that the number of information security professionals is expected to increase from its current quota of 1.6 million to 2.7 million by 2012, according to Computer Weekly.
John Colley, managing director of information security standards body (ISIC)2 for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, said that the anticipated rise is indicative of corporations shifting from network to data protection, reports the technology news provider.
"With more mobility in the workforce, it makes sense to use encryption to protect company information. It is relatively easy to encrypt laptop computers and Blackberries, but smartphones and USB devices are more vulnerable," he added.
The news follows reports this week that the malware threat to UK business IT departments is evolving, with infection now merely the start point from where cybercriminals launch increasingly sophisticated attacks.
