Technology vendors should do more to ensure their software and hardware are secure, and not simply rely on companies to make their IT safe, according to an industry expert.

Speaking in a debate at Infosecurity 2008 this week, Rhonda MacClean, chief information security officer for Barclays, said that when it tested technology, the company often found that it was not as secure as it should be, reports ZDNet.co.uk.

"We want code that as far as security is concerned is A-plus. But when we tested code [at Barclays] we found a lot of it was C-minus," she told the news provider.

Ms MacClean added that the problem is relatively easy to solve, however, saying: "We talk to [the suppliers] about the problem and we have got much better code as a result."

This news follows an announcement made earlier this week at Infosecurity 2008 and reported in Computer Weekly, saying that technological advances are leading car manufacturers to use encryption technology to secure information.

Safenet, a technology supplier, suggested that the trend arose as a result of manufacturers increasingly using embedded software and integrated circuits.
