Cybercriminals are localising their attacks by using languages other than English and exploiting locally popular applications, according to new research.

A study by IT security provider McAfee indicates that unique threats are being developed in different countries and regions.

Jeff Green, senior vice president at McAfee Avert Labs, said: "Cybercrooks have become extremely deft at learning the nuances of the local regions and creating malware specific to each country."

He went on to say that internet criminals are becoming more skilled at psychology and linguistics, and adding these to their computer programming abilities to make tailor online attacks.

Following a string of high-profile government data breaches, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced earlier this week that it has invested in disk encryption software.

The MoD will be provided with encryption technology for 20,000 laptops by IT security firm BeCrypt, allowing data to be securely protected and deployed across all non-Defence Information Infrastructure laptops.
