A computer disc containing details of 370,000 customers has been lost by HSBC.

The Financial Service Authority has been informed of the loss of a disc containing personal information - including names, dates of birth and levels of insurance cover - for life assurance customers at the bank.

The disc was lost four weeks ago after being sent by courier from the bank's life insurance offices in Southampton to the offices of a re-insurer.

A spokesperson for the bank said the disc would have limited use to criminals as it contains no address or bank account details and is password protected.

However, the bank has admitted that the data on the disc was not encrypted.

"We would like to apologise to its life assurance customers for any concern this may cause them," the spokeswoman said.

The bank is writing to all customers affected while an investigation into the matter takes place.
