Hackers are targeting human resources directors as they pursue confidential consumer information, it is claimed.

Anti-virus software provider McAfee have reported upon a data security a scam involving recruitment website Monster.com, reports Personnel Today.

Malicious emails were sent to website members inviting them to update their user profile, with those who did giving a Turkish hacker access to their personal details.

Greg Day, a McAfee security analyst, said scammers were "particularly targeting HR directors " since they have "the highest security clearance and access to vast amounts of information".

"Criminals aren't stupid, so if they're looking for this information, they'll do their research before they instigate their attack.

"The scope of the threat is very broad. The simple fact is, if someone wants information and you have it, you're very much a target."

Under alterations made the Data Protection Act earlier in 2008, employers can now be held accountable for data loss.

McAfee provides PC security software for home users, businesses, service providers and government agencies around the world.
