According to Computing.co.uk, The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has admitted to losing 96 laptops since the beginning of 2001, bringing the total number of the devices reported lost, stolen or missing by government bodies to more than 1,000.

A written parliamentary answer by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) minister Anne McGuire to Liberal Democrat shadow business secretary Sarah Teather last month revealed that 248 laptops have been reported lost, stolen or missing by DWP staff since 2002.

Further probing by Ms Teather led to the revelation that a total of more than 850 laptops have gone astray from government departments during the same time period, ZDNet.co.uk reports.

Other government organisations to report losses include the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Department of Health, the Ministry of Defence, the Treasury and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
