Fake internet pop-ups 'very sophisticated'
01 October 2008
Fake internet pop-ups are now "very sophisticated", according to an industry expert.
Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, has warned it is now "very difficult" to know "what they are and what they carry".
In news which could help create European information security jobs, he added that it is difficult to be able to know "what the telltale signs are".
He warned people to make an "informed decision" on pop-ups by knowing what site you are on and what they were expecting to come up on the screen.
Mr Neate said: "They are a bit like phishing emails; they have now become very sophisticated.
"The best thing to do, unless you are expecting it, is to become very wary of them and just don't have them."
A recent report by security firm Symantec found that over 711,000 new viruses had been identified in the past year.
This figure was an increase of 468 per cent compared to the previous year.
