Computer users make case for encryption

Consumers want encryption to be put in place on all personal data put onto the internet and held by governments, banks and businesses, according to a new survey.
A poll by vnunet.com at the recent Infosec 2008 IT security forum in London found that 77 per cent of those questioned thought that a spate of recent security breaches warranted legislation making encryption mandatory.
The technology news provider reported that 17 per cent thought that the cost of extra security should be subsidised by the government.
A statement by the firm said that many people feel that encryption is an effective and affordable way of making sure that important information is not exposed to unauthorised users if it is lost.
This news follows comments made earlier this week by Total Politics Magazine claiming that people will be unable to use the internet to vote for some time, due to the current security risks involved.
