Businesses 'ignorant' of information security

A government survey has found that the overwhelming majority of firms in the UK (79 per cent) responsible for security are not aware of IT security standards BS 7799 and ISO 27000.
The Information Security Breaches Survey concluded that the results meant that UK businesses were not adopting the most effective standards for business, according to partner at PwC, Chris Potter.
Despite the increased threat of viruses, the report did find that fewer companies had viruses than in the last two surveys.
Mr Potter said accreditation is another important part of adhering to standards.
"This means you can give your customers and business partners comfort about the quality of your security controls," he said.
PwC also discovered recently that the number of UK companies with an IT disaster recovery plan in place has increased but more than a quarter still do not have one.
The company questioned 1,002 businesses found that 72 per cent had a disaster recovery plan in place - up from 58 per cent two years ago.
