Two-thirds of business computers are not properly secure, an IT firm has discovered.

According to research by security and control firm Sophos, two out of every three corporate computers are failing to meet security standards as they are running out-of-date anti-virus software, missing security patches or have a disabled firewall.

John Shaw, a director at Sophos, told IT Pro: "This is not surprising to us because we've run tests in the past in this area, but I suspect these findings are going to be quite shocking to IT managers."

Although companies may give users security software that automatically updates itself, it is often difficult for IT manager to control what happens to computers once they are in the user's hands, he added.

Sophos claims that corporate information security can be improved by uniting end-point security and network access control which offers companies preventative protection in addition to reactive protection offered by anti-virus software, IT Pro reports.
