Information Security

The increased use of biometrics by commercial organisations to identify individuals creates information security risks for users, an IT system company has said.

According to Fujitsu Siemens, although biometric techniques make it possible to instantly verify individuals, the systems are not without risks.

Dave Pritchard, senior technology strategist at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, explained: "By making it easier to confirm that someone is in fact who they say they are, we will also be making it easier to track and monitor the activities of people.

"From a security perspective, we have already seen that criminals can create a number of different personas for themselves and more methods of identification means more openings for them."

The organisation predicts that use of the technology will be so widespread by 2013 that more people may be using it than are part of national ID schemes.

UK and other European governments should work more closely with IT companies and the commercial sector to develop a consistent approach towards personal identification security, Mr Pritchard added.
