Retailers have been urged to keep their information security systems up-to-date following a data breach at two US supermarket chains.

Earlier this month the security of 4.2 million bank accounts was compromised after a computer hacker accessed shoppers' credit card numbers at Sweetbay Supermarkets and Hannaford Bros.

Speaking to the Tampa Tribune, Dan Hoffman, a senior systems engineer with the Fiberlink Security firm, told retailers: "You need to get used to it.

"It's the tip of the iceberg, and it's only going to get worse. I don't mean to be gloom and doom, I really don't. But most of the companies I talk to don't have adequate protection for their systems."

The news comes as research has revealed that UK employees have admitted to evading information security measures in order to do their jobs.

A survey by IT Governance claims that managers are failing to understand the correct balance between the confidentiality and availability of information as 68 per cent of employees questioned said they bypass security controls to do their work.
