More than 850 laptops have gone missing from government departments, it has been revealed.
A written parliamentary answer by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) minister Anne McGuire to Liberal Democrat shadow business secretary Sarah Teather last week revealed that 248 laptops have been reported lost, stolen or missing by DWP staff since 2002.
Further probing by Ms Teather led to the revelation that a total of more than 850 laptops have gone astray from government departments during the same time period, ZDNet.co.uk reports.
In addition, 127 mobile phones and 20 PDAs have also been lost by the DWP.
Some 81 laptops and 23 mobile phones have gone missing from the Department for Children, Schools and Families and its predecessors from the start of the financial year 2002-03 to the present, while the Department of Health has reported 116 laptops and 110 mobile phones lost or stolen between 2002 and 2007.
