Information security employees at Wyndham Hotel Group (WHR) have shut down a data breach detected in late January.

Guests at the hotel may have had their credit card details stolen after a hacker successfully carried out a data breach on the hotel chain's website.

Data was moved off the site by those in IT security jobs working for the firm between October 2009 and January 2010 when the incident was discovered.

Website senior vice-president of the enterprise compliance and employment counsel at the group Kirsten Hotchkiss explained: "By going through the centralised network connections, the hacker was able to access and download information from several, but not all, of the WHR hotels and remove payment card information of a small percentage of our WHR customers."

Earlier this week, SophosLabs senior threat analyst Paul Baccas explained that it was "foolhardy" to think of a basic website as being any less dangerous for IT security than a more complex website.
