Women 'underrepresented' in IT
09/03/2010
A new gender equality plan is set to be introduced by the European Union (EU) to address the underrepresentation of women in the workplace, especially in the IT sector.
The EU Action Plan on gender inequality was outlined by the European Commission (EC) and over the next five years efforts will be made to ensure Europe is a role model for the rest of the world, V3 has reported.
In the IT sector an emphasis is being placed upon explaining why there is a lack of women in the industry as well as how the industry can be made more appealing to women.
EC statistics show that only one in five IT practitioners are women and in the 1980s there were higher numbers of women in the sector than there are now.
Yesterday (March 8th) was International Women's Day and the focus was on gender inequalities and unequal pay in the workplace.
The aim of the day, held each year, is to promote equal rights for woman and make sure sex discrimination is not a prevalent part of society.
