Royal Dutch Shell 'suffers major information security breach'
18/02/2010
Royal Dutch Shell plc has fallen victim to a major information security breach, according to reports.
The contact database for 176,000 staff and contractors at the firm is said to have been copied and sent to lobbyists and activists opposed to the company.
Richard Wiseman, chief ethics and compliance officer at Royal Dutch Shell, apparently said in an email to staff: "The global address list, containing contact information of everyone in Shell and some contractors, joint ventures and other third parties, has been downloaded without authorisation and distributed to some external parties."
He went on to say that an investigation has been launched and the issue has been raised with the appropriate data protection authorities.
Alan Phillips, chief executive officer of 7Safe, has spoken of the difficulties organisations face in attempting to prevent digital files from being copied.
He pointed out that businesses need to strike a balancing act between information security and usability.
