Business continuity and risk plans are being overlooked by small firms, according to a cloud computing platform provider.

Small business owners tend to be more worried about what happens today rather than "what's happening tomorrow", claims chief executive officer at ThinkGrid Rob Lovell.

He suggested that these business continuity preparations are probably being overlooked for the "wrong reasons" by those in IT security jobs.

Mr Lovell advised staff at information security providers not to make it "scary" for businesses.

He added: "Don't let it get disruptive, just make it so people can easily understand it.

"And if you do that and make it cheap and simple and easy to buy, then people will buy it."

Recent research by messaging solutions provider Teneros indicated that most business recognise the need for business risk planning, but believe that the infrastructure and cost demands are a barrier to adoption.

In particular, email downtime prevention was picked out by half of businesses as either "very important" or "extremely important".
