Australia could make internet security compulsory Australia could make internet security compulsory

Security software could become compulsory in Australia as the country attempts to get a handle on cybercrime.

The proposal is a revived plan that was developed in the early days of dial-up internet and if agreed upon would make IT security software a legal necessity.

In a new report, entitled 'Hackers, fraudsters and botnets: tackling the problem of cybercrime', industry experts claim that the creation of a cybersecurity department that would coordinate the adoption of security software is vital.

A multi-part committee of MPs commissioned the new report as a result of the huge increase in the number of cybercrime problems spotted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The report said that the sophistication of modern cybercriminal activity means many people are often "unaware that their personal financial information is at risk of theft by criminals operating online".

According to the paper, the Australian government should invest as much time, effort and money in IT security as it does in ensuring national security.

Reformed hacker Robert Schifreen claimed that making personal information available on the internet increases the likelihood a person will fall victim to cybercriminal activity.ADNFCR-1355-ID-19856541-ADNFCR
