IT gender gap 'can be closed'
05/02/2010
A gender gap still exists in IT but it is possible to close it, according to an expert.
The divide "can be overcome by raising awareness and by providing education", said a spokesperson for BCS (formerly the British Computer Society), the Chartered Institute for IT.
Research published in November last year by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT revealed that the information-savvy citizen in the UK is more likely to be male.
The study also found that only 20 per cent of the UK population are so-called information-savvy citizens, suggesting the majority of the population is not benefiting from the full social, cultural and commercial benefits of the modern, data-driven society.
Professionals in IT sales jobs may also be interested to note the claim of 23 per cent of respondents that IT has failed to improve their lives.
The BCS research was commissioned as part of a campaign, which includes a new website savvycitizens.bcs.org, designed to help people by signposting useful and expert sources of information and advice.
