Over the coming decade, there will be significant growth in broadband internet technologies operating out of space, it is claimed.

A report entitled Space Innovation and Growth Strategy, published by the industry trade organisation UKspace, reveals that the global space market is forecast to be worth at least £400 billion by 2030.

As well as broadband internet, other predicted growth areas are: satellite navigation systems, internet on the move, so-called smart homes and mobile telephone services.

The report, which may be of great interest to IT sales and marketing professionals, describes the UK space industry as a hidden success story and a key engine of growth for the economy.

As part of an ambitious 20-year strategy, the industry aims to capture ten per cent of the global market by 2030 - £40 billion – and, in doing so, create 100,000 UK jobs.

Richard Peckham, chairman of UKspace and business development director for Astrium Limited in the UK, said: "It's going to be step by step but that's the trend, putting more computation up there and more storage up there and then you can start to put the more frequently used pages and things up there."
