Mortgage firm commits to improve IT security
26/02/2010
A mortgage company has committed to strengthening its governance and compliance procedures, after it accidentally disclosed 15,333 account details.
Redstone Mortgages has been found to be in breach of the Data Protection Act by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), after personal information was emailed to a member of the public by mistake.
Included in the email was data relating to individual arrears and possession proceedings.
Chief executive of the mortgage firm David Lautier has since signed an agreement committing him to make sure personal information is password protected before it is emailed externally.
Head of enforcement and investigations at the ICO Sally-Anne Poole explained: "It is essential that the right procedure is followed and care is taken when sending out emails of this nature.
"If personal information falls into the wrong hands, individuals could experience considerable distress."
The announcement follows work by IT security staff at the Alzheimer's Society to improve data security after staff details were stolen.
