IT sector 'should embrace flexible working' IT sector 'should embrace flexible working'

IT sector professionals should be made to feel as if a constant office presence is required in order to safeguard their employment, it has been claimed.

Writing in her Computing.co.uk blog, Joanna Sedley-Burke of Sovereign Business Integration says it is "counter-productive" for those working in, for instance, IT sales jobs and risk management jobs to be discouraged from home working over redundancy fears.

She claims that as businesses feel the pinch of the credit crunch, workers are increasingly believing workplace visibility is as important, if not more so, than the successful performance of designated tasks and duties.

Ms Sedley-Burke advocates non-standard employment practises, stating: "Remote working should be encouraged to keep costs to a minimum and maximise morale and it is the job of the employer to reassure staff that this is the case.

"The absence of the daily commute alone benefits the environment, saving money and improving staff satisfaction -to remove these benefits now of all times is ludicrous.

She added that if firms were to make any investment this year, "it should be in wise IT procurement facilitating remote working to fully use IT".

According to cross-sector research provided by telecommunications solutions provider Avaya, 94 per cent of European workers want their employer to provide flexible working options.
