Mobile devices 'pose potential security risks'
12/07/2010
Businesses should be aware of the data that is stored on the mobile devices their staff use and how this could put their information security at risk, it has been suggested.
Recent research from Unisys, which was conducted by the International Data Corporation, revealed European businesses were surprisingly unwilling to readily adopt consumer technologies, such as netbooks and iPads, in the workplace.
Even though companies are open to the business use of these consumer devices, they are concerned about how to adequately support staff who use the technologies, fearing for the potential risks to information security and data protection.
Dan Shey, enterprise practice director at ABI Research, a technology market intelligence company, said: "Businesses will need to be more cognisant of the information or data contained in these devices and the potential security threats."
He explained that this is because, as is implied by the term mobile devices, they can be taken off the business' premises.
Mr Shey said he expected the adoption of new mobile devices, including the iPad, to come from smaller companies.
Due to lower staff numbers, they will probably have fewer concerns surrounding information and network security.
