Employees 'should be aware' of policies surrounding social media

09/07/2010

Employees need to be made aware of their employer's rules surrounding the use of social networking sites at work, it has been suggested.

Increasingly, social media platforms are being used by cybercriminals to spread malicious software, according to a report by content security solutions and forensics malware tools provider Norman.

Firms should ensure they have adequate business continuity plans in place to protect network security should a malware attack occur.

Dan Raywood, online news editor at IT security publication SC Magazine, said employers should make sure their staff are "familiar with policy on broadcasting information and attachments" when they grant access to social networking sites like Facebook.

Businesses need to make sure staff are also aware of potential information security issues when it comes to use of the web, he added.

Recently, a survey by Infosecurity Europe revealed that the use of new technologies, such as social network sites and cloud computing, has made UK organisations more vulnerable to cyber attacks.
